The Calgary Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating four men who may have information on a series of ATM frauds.

Since April 2007, banking customers and consumers in Calgary have been targeted by an organized crime group based out of Eastern Canada. The thieves have been stealing debit and credit card information from consumers by installing skimming equipment in debit card Personal Identification Number (PIN) pads in at least 20 different Calgary businesses. The targeted businesses have included movie theaters, fast food restaurants, sporting good stores and clothing stores.

In each of these cases, the suspects compromised a debit card PIN pad, installed skimming equipment inside and were able to steal the debit card numbers and PINs of over 2,500 Calgary consumers. This same group has also been attacking ATMs and retail outlets in Edmonton and Red Deer, and has compromised close to 6,000 card numbers province-wide. This brings the total loss in the Province of Alberta to approximately $5.5 million during this time frame.

Since September 2007, on at least 12 different occasions, four members of this group have snuck into Calgary ATM vestibules and installed skimming equipment on the ATMs. They have placed skimming equipment over the card reader as well as a mini-camera under the hooded portion of PIN pad in order to steal the numbers. At least 50 bank customers are known to have had their bank cards compromised through this scheme, and the banks have been defrauded for over $2.5 million in Calgary alone.

Police are seeking the assistance of the public in identifying four men who may have information on the ATM scams. Payment card fraud cost Canadians in excess of $365 million last year in combined debit and credit card losses and affected 119,000 debit cardholders.

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact A/Det. Darren Hafner at 206-5982 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
